However, it has surprised many to see him on reality TV series other than Vanderpump Rules. Though it takes dedication to watch Tom, audiences have liked to despise him.

Along with Tom, I think Bob Harper from The Biggest Loser is a dubious pick because he has dedicated his professional life to pushing risky diet and fitness regimens on cast members who are overweight and in need of assistance. Dylan Efron, the brother of Zac Efron (yes, that Zac Efron), was cast poorly, too, primarily because he will spend the whole season premiere having to defend his identity. The Traitors season 3 lacks the strong start that the previous season had because of the contentious casting choices.

The Traitors season 3’s power players are obvious and could easily be eliminated early in the game, despite some dubious casting decisions. The problem here is not that the game is difficult to understand; rather, it’s that certain players have a tendency to forget that they shouldn’t target one another for being fierce rivals. Regrettably, this occurs frequently and usually means problems for fans of vintage reality TV shows.

Survivor veterans “Boston” Rob Mariano and Tony Vlachos are among the cast members, so fans of reality TV competitions will quickly realize that they are skilled players with easy strategic thinking. Comparably, the fact that members of the cast like Britney Haynes and Danielle Reyes are skilled in deceitful games will be the main source of concern for them. Because they are skilled at playing strategic games, the game’s power players will be targeted, which might be harmful to their chances of surviving, being left alone, and not being banished from The Traitors castle.

Competitors who are familiar with strategy games before entering The Traitors typically know how they want to play the game and that decisions made in a game when money is at stake are not meant to be taken personally. Although there are always going to be exceptions to the norm, participants TV competitions often keep their personal lives outside from the game.

Regretfully, the other members of the cast do not have a background TV game, which is unfortunate for the competitors. Because they have not developed the same ability to compartmentalize as gamers do, celebrities who appear on unstructured shows or do not have a past TV tend to take the game much more personally. While some people, like Phaedra Parks from The Traitors season 2, have managed to keep their true emotions apart from the game in the past, others have not. It is difficult for The Traitors cast to compete on an even playing field because of the absence of compartmentalization.

The Traitors Should Treat Its Casting Like Other Competition Shows

Reality TV Gamers Should Be the Priority

Even though I like The Traitors’ eclectic cast, I believe the game would be better off without it. The concept of Dorinda Medley from RHONY and Boston Rob from Survivor competing to see who is a more faithful is admirable, but exchanges like that get old after a season with twelve episodes. The integrity of the game itself is compromised in a way that is difficult to regain when the reality TV stars, usually from Bravo series, get involved and start taking things personally. The strategy is what interests me most.

A whole cast of reality TV gamers in a season of The Traitors would be amazing. It sounds like the ideal program to me—participants from reality TV competition shows like The Challenge, Big Brother, Survivor, and others—playing a game that is more cerebral than physical and calls for a cool stream of deceit. The drama that arises from the two universes meeting is something I find enjoyable, but it may also complicate the show and undermine the overall goal of the game. I hope The Traitors decide to try something else in the future.
