1 Cobra Kai Scene Set Up a Huge Chozen vs. Kim Sun-Yung Conflict for Season 6
A scene from the fifth season of Cobra Kai subtly hinted at Kim Sun-Yung and Chozen’s conflict in the sixth and final season of the program. One of the biggest surprises of Cobra Kai season 6 was the confirmation that Kim Sun-Yung survives in the timeline of The Karate Kid. Master Kim, who gained notoriety as the fighter who taught Terry Silver and John Kreese, appears destined to be one of Cobra Kai’s last antagonists, if not the series’ main foe.
His main rivals will be Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, given the course the series is headed. As the main protagonists of the series and the co-heads of the Miyagi-do dojo, they’re on a collision course with Kreese, who is leading Kim Sun-Yung’s students into the Sekai Taikai tournament. Kreese’s current alliance with Master Kim naturally makes the latter an enemy to both Daniel and Johnny. This could extend to Chozen as well, assuming he comes back in time for the start of the competition. The fact that the two share a personal connection could make this an especially interesting encounter.
Summary
- Kim Sun-Yung is alive in The Karate Kid timeline, setting up a clash with Chozen and making him a key villain in Cobra Kai season 6.
- Master Kim’s history with Chozen’s uncle Sato could lead to a showdown between Chozen and Kreese, representing a second-generation rivalry.
- An eventual clash between Chozen and Master Kim seems imminent, possibly leading to a fight with Kreese over honors and loyalty.
Chozen’s Uncle Had a History with Kim Sun-Yung
The Karate Kid Part II’s Sato Disliked Kim-Sung Yung
Chozen knew he had received training from Kim Sun-Yung the moment he saw Terry Silver’s fighting style in Cobra Kai season 5. Sato, Chozen’s uncle and a character in The Karate Kid Part II, had told Chozen about Master Kim. Chozen stated that Sato had “much anger” toward Kim, even though it didn’t seem like she knew much about their relationship. Regarding Sato’s relationship with Master Kim, Cobra Kai was noticeably vague, implying that it will be crucial to the success of the program going forward.
It is reasonable to presume that the two were rivals in some capacity because they both taught martial arts and appeared to be hostile toward one another. That could be of particular importance to Cobra Kai season 6 with Chozen and Master Kim set up to be on opposing sides during the Sekai Taikai (and whatever comes after). If Chozen learns the full details of Kim’s history with Sato, it could lead to Chozen looking to avenge a slight against his uncle. Family honor is already known to be a priority for Chozen, so him taking up Sato’s role in whatever conflict he had with Kim makes sense for his character.

Kim Sun-Yung’s Sato Connection Could Lead to A Kreese vs. Chozen Showdown
Chozen Confronting Master Kim Could Lead to A Fight with Kreese
With the way the series has set up Chozen’s relationship with Master Kim, it seems inevitable that the two would eventually collide. However, it seems improbable and unfair for them to battle given Kim Sun-Yung’s age in Cobra Kai. Nevertheless, their past can spark a major conflict with Kreese. Chozen and Kreese might represent the second generation of their rivalry and battle for the honor of their senses as students of Sato and Master Kim, respectively. Alternatively, if Kim insulted Sato, Chozen would be furious and Kreese would have to battle him in Cobra Kai on his sensei’s behalf.

Karate Kid & Cobra Kai Timeline Explained (Including Season 5)
Cobra Kai season 1 is set in 2017, 33 years after the first Karate Kid movie takes place. Across its five seasons, Cobra Kai continues the Karate Kid story all the way through to the summer of 2019, with Daniel and Johnny’s personal animosity now almost four decades old. Their rivalry has been passed down to their children and students too. Meanwhile, Mr. Miyagi’s legacy remains one of the most important elements of the saga. The full “Miyagiverse” timeline encompasses his pre-World War II origins, and it could even be said that The Karate Kid truly began long ago when his ancestor Shimpo fell asleep fishing off the coast of Okinawa, vanishing only to return from China a decade later with the secret of Miyagi-Do karate. With Johnny learning Miyagi-Do karate and the upcoming Sekai Taikai tournament, the time may dig deeper into the Miyagiverse lore in Cobra Kai season 6. In the meantime, here’s the current Karate Kid and Cobra Kai timeline explained.

The Karate Kid timeline is greatly expanded by the Cobra Kai TV series, which spans more than 35 years between the first Karate Kid film and Cobra Kai season 5. The entire first Karate Kid trilogy took place between 1984 and 1985 and focused on the relationship between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita), who was the sensei. The Next Karate Kid, released in 1994, is set in the same year and features future Oscar winner Hilary Swank in her breakthrough role as Mr. Miyagi’s next pupil. The non-canonical The Karate Kid reboot made an attempt to revive the series in 2010 by introducing new characters portrayed by Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith in a 2010 scenario.
Before The Karate Kid (1925-1984)
In Tomi Village, Okinawa, Nariyoshi (Kesuke) Miyagi is born in 1925. Along with Sato Toguchi, Miyagi’s closest friend, whom the senior Miyagi also considered like a son, he received Miyagi-Do karate training from his father when he was a young child.
1940: Yukie, who Sato was promised in an arranged marriage, wins Miyagi’s heart. Disgraced, Sato challenges Miyagi to a death-defying duel. Miyagi, on the other hand, emigrates to the US from Okinawa.
1940–1943: Miyagi moves to Los Angeles with his wife, whom he met in Hawaii and later married. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, sparking the United States’ involvement into World War II. Miyagi joins the 442nd Infantry Regiment of the United States Army. Miyagi’s life is saved by Lt. Jack Pierce; to pay him back, Miyagi trains his friend Jack in Miyagi-Do karate, which ostensibly made Lt. Pierce Mr. Miyagi’s first student.
1943 – While Miyagi was serving in the war, his wife and unborn child die in the Manzanar Japanese internment camp.
1965 – John Kreese receives a pamphlet to enlist in the U.S. Army. He gets into a fight with a varsity jock and wins the heart of Betsy, whom he falls in love with.
December 18, 1966 – Daniel LaRusso is born in New Jersey.
August 20, 1967 – Johnny Lawrence is born in Los Angeles.
1968 – Deployed in Vietnam, Kreese, Twig (AKA Terry Silver), and Ponytail are recruited by Captain Turner into his Special Forces team. Betsy dies in a car accident; a fact Turner withholds from Kreese. Their unit is captured by the Viet Cong and they are held as prisoners of war. Forced to fight each other, Kreese kills Turner when he learns Betsy is dead as U.S. forces liberate their POW camp.
In the San Fernando Valley, the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament is founded in 1968/1969. (Year unknown because the competition was rescheduled from December of 1984–1985 to May of 2018).
1970: John Kreese wins the title of U.S. Karate Champion while fighting in Vietnam. In addition, he saves the life of Terry Silver, who ends up being both his karate pupil and closest friend.
Daniel LaRusso’s father passes away in 1974.
Before 1979: Terry Silver buys the Cobra Kai dojo for John Kreese to operate from his Los Angeles home. But Terry has to tell the bad news to Kreese—his father insisted that Silver take over the family company, DynaTox. Terry departs Kreese as the only teacher for Cobra Kai.
1979 – Johnny Lawrence rides his bike and discovers the Cobra Kai dojo. Johnny’s abusive stepfather Sid Weinberg reluctantly pays for Johnny to join Cobra Kai.
Summer 1982 – Johnny meets Ali Mills during a screening of Rocky III and they begin dating.
December 1982 – Johnny wins his first All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament.
December 1983 – Johnny becomes the first two-time, back-to-back All Valley Under 18 Karate Champion, not losing a single point and beating his friend and fellow Cobra Kai Tommy in the finals.
Summer 1984 – Johnny got so drunk partying with Cobra Kai that he missed Ali’s birthday. Ali breaks up with Johnny. In New Jersey, Lucille LaRusso gets a job in Los Angeles and drives across the country with Daniel to start their new life.
