Silence Is Horrifying,’ But Here’s Why Chuck Lorre Doesn’t Use Fake Laugh Tracks in Shows Like the Big Bang Theory and More

With a lengthy history of creating or co-creating hit television shows including Dharma & Greg, Two and a Half Men, Mom, Bob Hearts Abishola (which concluded earlier in the 2024 TV schedule), and of course The Big Bang Theory, Chuck Lorre is rightfully referred to as the King of Sitcoms. The majority of his shows are multi-cam comedy, and the audio from the completed programs features laughing from the crowd. Contrary to popular belief, Lorre doesn’t use laugh tracks that have been pre-programmed for his shows. He finds value in humor that go flat on set, but he also understands that live studio audiences can be hard on jokes that don’t land.

In an interview with The Wrap, Lorre discussed the state of sitcoms and explained why he thinks multi-camera shows are still relevant. He also discussed the usage of live studio audiences for multi-camera broadcasts, stating that quiet during tapings is terrifying. However, it informs you that you are mistaken.

It’s difficult to imagine a more direct response to a joke than a non-chuckling audience, and it seems that this can assist Lorre in correcting his mistakes. Not only are his shows sustaining multi-camera series with studio audiences, but so are NBC’s Lopez vs. Lopez and Extended Family. Actually, in the Lopez vs.

The creator of Lopez made a special effort to clarify that the show does not use a laugh track, and Donald Faison was ecstatic about moving from nine seasons of Scrubs to a live studio audience for Extended Family. It’s obvious that Lorre and other industry players still believe in the concept.

However, that does not mean that there is no risk involved. Lorre made light of the fact that it’s a “wonderful guessing game that involves millions of dollars” and went on to explain:

In all honesty, you shouldn’t be able to hear the laughter in the sitcom with four cameras since you are laughing.

It’s interesting to note that Chuck Lorre has departed from his typical format in several of his most recent productions. Prior to Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, he clarified that it’s critical to establish a rapport with viewers. While Young Sheldon was a single camera show without a studio audience, the spinoff will use multiple cameras. Bookie is a single cam as well and may be streamed with a Max subscription. Nevertheless, after all of his achievements, I believe Lorre more than qualifies as someone whose opinion can be trusted when it comes to what works and what doesn’t in terms of comedy on the small screen.

Whether Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will follow in the footsteps of past Chuck Lorre productions and become a massive, long-running smash is still to be determined. Big Bang Theory continuity may be more guidelines than actual rules following Young Sheldon’s revisions, but canon implies that Georgie and Mandy’s marriage actually shouldn’t last all that long.

In the interim, you can always go back and read the earlier instalments of Cooper family history if you’re one of the many fans eagerly anticipating the fall CBS launch of the Georgie and Mandy spinoff. Max offers the first six seasons of Young Sheldon and all twelve seasons of The Big Bang Theory for streaming.
