It has Been an Honor’: The DCU’s Superman Movie Has Finished Filming, Here’s How James Gunn Celebrated
While Aqua man and the Lost Kingdom recently concluded the DCEU period of the DC filmography, the debut of the new DC Universe is also not too far off. Max will be the focus of the animated series Creature Commandos starting in December. Next summer, James Gunn’s Superman will introduce a much wider audience to this common continuity. As a result, while fans will have to wait another year for Superman to appear in 2025 motion pictures, Gunn and his crew have wrapped up the filming of the next DC picture, and he toasted the achievement on social media.
At the end of February, Superman started filming sequences in Svalbard, Norway, which featured Kal-El/Clark Kent’s Fortress of Solitude. Photographing himself alongside members of the Superman cast and crew, Gunn celebrated the end of principal photography with this image. Check out the Instagram post below!
James Gunn congratulated the Superman crew in his caption, praising their dedication, imagination, and labor of love in making this project a reality. The primary objective of the filmmaker is to narrate the narrative of “a good man in a world that isn’t always so much,” and he has been encouraged and enabled to progress by the “goodness and kindness” he has encountered from individuals he has worked with over the past five months. All this is not to say that Superman will not go through reshoots later, but it is good to hear that Gunn had such a positive experience on this production.
A little more than two months after revealing the new “S” emblem for the title character, Gunn celebrated the first day of Superman filming by showcasing David Corens wet in full Man of Steel regalia. Superman will be younger in this film than in Henry Cavill’s, but at the beginning of the film, he will already have been defending humanity for an unspecified amount of time. Naturally, Clark will collaborate closely with Rachel Brosnahan’s character Lois Lane at The Daily Planet while he is not traveling around the globe to save lives. Other significant figures from the Superman mythology to make appearances are Wendell Pierce’s Perry White, Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen, and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor.
Superman will also play a significant role in creating the foundation for the larger DC Universe mythology. Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Rick Flag Sr., and others are confirmed to make appearances; there are even rumors that Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El will make an appearance before taking the lead in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026. Additionally, the film will pay homage to the late Christopher Reeve’s Superman era with a cameo as reporter played by his son, Will Reeve, an ABC News correspondent.
As the July 11, 2025 release date of Superman approaches, do not forget to return to Cinema Blend for additional information. With a Max subscription, you may also amuse yourself with previous Superman film and television adaptations.
Superman: Release Date, Cast and Other Things We Know About James Gunn’s DCU Movie
A few DC films are on the horizon, but very few, if any, are as widely anticipated as James Gunn’s Superman, which was once known as Superman: Legacy. Even if there are still other superhero movies scheduled for big and small screens before the film’s summer 2025 debut, it is understandable why so many fans are eager to learn more about this fascinating project centered around one of the greatest superheroes of all time.
Even though Superman is still over a year away, we already know a lot about the film, including when it will be released, which big-name actors will be in it, what the plot will include, and what it means for the “big picture” of the DCU going forward. Here is everything we currently know about the film.

When Will Superman Be Released?
In the big picture, we will not have to wait long for Superman because the DCU film is scheduled to debut in theaters on July 11, 2025. James Gunn revealed the release date in the middle of DC’s “Gods and Monsters” announcement video back in January, where the co-head of the film studio revealed the massive slate of upcoming projects of all shapes and sizes.
Although release dates are always subject to change, particularly considering the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, Gunn has officially said that Superman will still make his public debut in July 2025. The director expressed gratitude to the gifted team on Instagram in November 2023 for their continued work on character and scene designs throughout the strikes.

A few months later, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran spoke with Empire and went into more insight about the impending Superman film, although he refrained from giving away specifics about the plot. He said:
It is not a narrative of origin. The main theme is how Superman manages to reconcile his human upbringing with his Kryptonian ancestry. Superman is a symbol of justice, honesty, and the American way of life. To a world that considers kindness to be archaic, he is kindness.
Although the exact moment in Clark Kent’s story when Superman occurs has not yet been disclosed, more information about this should be available very soon.
Superman is being written and directed by James Gunn.
Even though James Gunn was writing the story for the film, he was still undecided about directing Superman when he originally revealed that it was in development. However, everything changed in March 2023 when Gunn announced on Twitter that he would be assuming the role of director.
The co-CEO of DC Studios shared an incredibly moving statement via a series of tweets. He first revealed that the release date of July 11, 2025, is his late father’s birthday. He then discussed how, despite not fully understanding the obsession, his dad supported his love of comic books and movies when he was growing up. The amazing chapter was concluded by the Dawn of the Dead 2004 remake screenwriter expressing his enthusiasm for the Superman story and his excitement “as we begin this journey.”
