I Can’t Believe Venom 3 Is Repeating the Same Villain Mistake for A Third Time
It seems like the same villain error will be made again in Venom: The Last Dance’s first trailer, and it is unbelievable Sony would follow suit a third time. When the first trailer for Venom: The Last Dance was released on June 3, 2024, I was excited to watch it because, although being situated outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seemed like a welcome change of pace for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe following the underwhelming releases of Morbius and Madame Web. The movie’s villains worry me, even if I believe Tom Hardy’s third journey as Eddie Brock’s Venom will be an intense and touching tale.
In 2018’s Venom, Tom Hardy made his screen debut as investigative journalist Eddie Brock. He soon rose to prominence as the dashing face of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. With over $1.3 billion in revenue at the worldwide box office, Venom and its 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, are the most successful SSU films to date. Based on the trailer, I believe Venom: The Last Dance will be just as lucrative. But one thing in the teaser worries me—it looks like Sony is going to replicate the same grave mistake from previous Venom movies in the 2024 follow-up.

I am concerned that Sony is making the same villain error three times after watching the first trailer for Venom: The Last Dance.
In all his prior SSU films, Venom has engaged in combat with other symbiotes, and in Venom: The Last Dance, I believe he will do so once again.
Sony made a mistake in Venom: The Last Dance by not realizing that symbiote vs. symbiote combat are frequently confusing and disorganized.
Venom Has Battled Other Symbiotes in All of His SSU Movies
While I thought it was fantastic to see Venom take on Riot in Venom, I was worried when Venom faced Carnage in the follow-up. I get the impression from Venom: The Last Dance’s trailer that the decisive fight will be played out again. In the Venom: The Last Dance teaser, we see multiple symbiote samples in the lab of Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character. Venom even claims that Eddie Brock and he have been discovered by his homeworld. This will essentially be a rehash of plot points from earlier Venom films, despite the possibility that it could set up an epic showdown between Venom and multiple other symbiotes.
I did notice that the trailer for Venom: The Last Dance showed Venom fighting off against what appears to be a Xenophage—a species that appears to be fed on symbiotes in Marvel Comics. The Xenophage shares a visual design with Venom’s species, thus while this is luckily not just another symbiote, it will still have the same issues as a standard symbiote vs. symbiote conflict. The usual last fights in the Venom series might take on a new twist if Venom faces a Xenophage, but I am concerned that the same visual problems that arise when two symbiotes battle each other would still exist.
Why Symbiote Vs. Symbiote Fights Are a Challenge in The Venom Movies
Venom against a fresh, more intriguing foe would have had a greater impact.
I am nervous since Venom has faced off against other symbiotes in his last two excursions, and I fear he will do again in Venom: The Last Dance. This is down to the fact that symbiote vs. symbiote fights in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe have lacked the impact they possibly ought to have and have instead been aesthetically disorganized, difficult to follow, and difficult to understand. Dark-colored creatures with comparable power sets, Riot, Carnage, and Venom can all fashion weapons and other tools from their appendages. Regretfully, this levels the playing field and makes them difficult to differentiate.
The fact that Sony used Spider-Man villains as the cornerstone for its shared Marvel universe bewilders me, considering Venom may encounter many more formidable foes in Venom: The Last Dance. Given that the next film represents Venom’s last adventure in the SSU, it would have had greater effect if Venom had faced up against a fresh, intriguing antagonist—possibly even Peter Parker’s Spider-Man himself. This would save Venom from having to battle another symbiote, which would make his climactic battle his best film to date.

The primary issue appears to be the actual caliber of the Spider-Man Universe films produced by Sony. Madame Web and Morbius have both received harsh criticism, and for good cause.
As a result of Morbius’s failure to engage fans and general online ridicule, potential hints for a Morbius 2 film appear to have been shelved. Since the initial trailer was released, Madame Web has been the target of some negative comments, and now that the film has been released, it appears that some of the concerns were valid. Audiences are probably questioning if Madame Web is worse than Morbius when determining whether to give it a chance.

However, they were derailed by the financial setback of the 2014 sequel, which was previously known by the unofficial moniker of the VenomVerse.
Even though Venom (2018), Sony’s debut feature, received negative reviews, it was not enough to dash the company’s hopes for global success as it brought in an astounding $856.1 million at the box office.
