Plot

Eddie Palmer, an ex-felon, and former standout football player in high school, was sentenced to 12 years in jail for armed robbery and attempted murder. After he moves in with his grandmother Vivian, she occasionally looks after a little boy who fits the conventional mold of a girl called Sam. Sam’s mother, Shelly, is a heroin addict.

Palmer starts a job as a janitor at the neighborhood school and assists Vivian in keeping an eye on Sam while Shelly and her violent boyfriend Jerry frequently leave town. Palmer is compelled to take on the role of Sam’s interim guardian until Shelly returns after Vivian passes away. Palmer does not want anything to do with Sam at first, but he quickly warms up to him. He even takes him to a fundraising bowling match and high school football game, where he befriends Maggie, Sam’s teacher. When Palmer learns that Vivian bequeathed her house to the church in her will, her attorney notifies him that he will have 30 days to vacate the property after it sells.

Palmer tells Maggie that he was hurt in a game while playing for Louisiana State University, following a successful high school football career. Palmer’s revelations to Maggie come as they get closer. He went home and began taking medications after losing his scholarship and leaving college. He made the decision one evening to loot his friends and the safe of a wealthy family in the community. The owner of the residence was supposed to be gone, but when he returned, Palmer almost killed him with a baseball bat. Maggie points up all the good he has done in Sam’s life to reassure Palmer that, despite who he was, he has changed and is a decent man now.

One day, after visiting a buddy, Sam sobs and has gaudy makeup all over his face. Palmer believes that Sam’s classmate did it, but Sam informs him that Daryl, Palmer’s friend, was the one who did it. Palmer catches Daryl in a bar and becomes enraged, beating him up. When Shelly comes back the following day, she tries to get Sam back, but Child Protective Services quickly takes him away. Palmer applies for guardianship, but his application is turned down because of his parole status and undetermined living circumstances. The judge returns Sam to Shelly’s care despite Palmer’s entreaties. Even after Palmer agrees to compensate Shelly, she rejects his desire to designate him as Sam’s legal guardian. Palmer later sees Jerry aggressively torturing Sam and Shelly. When Palmer steps in, he discovers that Jerry and Shelly are abusing drugs in front of Sam. After attacking Jerry, he and Sam run away.

When Palmer is suspected of kidnapping Sam, Shelly phones the police. He returns Sam to Shelly after speaking with Maggie on the phone, and he is apprehended there. While Sam cries that he would rather be with Palmer than his mother, he tries to fend off the cops and rushes after the police car as Palmer is driven away. Shelly declines to file charges after witnessing Sam’s love for Palmer. She explains that Palmer was only taking Sam to get food, and she simply forgot. When Shelly meets with Sam, she asks him, “Would it be okay if he went to live with Palmer?” while crying. In the end, Shelly decides to grant Palmer custody of Sam. Palmer and Sam move in with Maggie while they get ready to sell Vivian’s house.

Acceptance
Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 108 critic reviews, with an average rating of 6.3/10, were 72% positive. “Although it traffics in familiar territory, Palmer is elevated by worthy themes and a strong ensemble led by an impressive Justin Timberlake,” is the consensus opinion expressed by the website’s critics. The movie has received “mixed or average reviews” on Metacritic, where it has a weighted average score of 53 out of 100 based on 21 critics.

The film received a grade of B− from David Ehrlich of Indiewire, who wrote: “It’s saying that the film’s most touching moments don’t stem from how Palmer and Sam have changed so much as they do from the permission, they’ve given each other to be themselves. The little things go a long way in something this broad. Palmer may not be a work of great art, but it takes skill for something so foreseeable to not come out as dishonest.”

“Despite the flashes of something more challenging, Palmer is a film content to play it safe (his true road to redemption is to slot himself into a ready-made nuclear family), a truly whelming experience that wants you to desperately feel everything from tears to joy,” wrote Benjamin Lee of The Guardian, giving the movie two out of five stars.
