What Is Luck About?

Sam Greenfield, who is arguably the unluckiest person alive, is the protagonist of the Luck narrative. She experiences an unfathomable number of accidents throughout her hectic days, such as her bicycle pump malfunctioning after obtaining a flat tire and her toast invariably ending up jam-side down. Sam seems to attract attention to everything that is wrong, even to the surprise of those around her. All of that, though, is changed on a fateful day when Sam discovers a genuine lucky coin. Now that she has this coin in her pocket, things are beginning to improve at last. Until the least fortunate person ever loses their fortunate pennies, that is.

After experiencing a taste of the good life, Sam tries everything in her power to obtain another lucky penny. However, she never imagined that her quest would take her to a mystical realm where a group of supernatural creatures create, oversee, and distribute good and bad luck. In an attempt to change her luck, Sam poses as a Good Luck employee and enlists the help of her reluctant sidekick, Bob the Scottish talking cat.

Plot

To the dismay of her younger companion Hazel, who is hoping to be adopted son, Sam Greenfield, an orphaned young woman whose life has been filled with disaster, is driven out of her foster home. Sam finds a penny one night after eating dinner with a black cat, which she intends to present to Hazel for her assortment of fortunate objects that would aid in her adoption. Sam discovers the following day that her luck has improved thanks to the penny. But she flushes the penny down the toilet by mistake, losing it.

When Sam runs into the cat again, she laments her mistake and tells it what occurred, which makes the cat yell at her for misplacing the penny.

Startled, Sam pursues the feline down a gateway into the Land of Fortune, whence beings such as leprechauns bestow good fortune onto humanity. Bob, the cat, needs the penny to travel, and if anyone finds out that he lost it, he will be banished. Bob strikes a deal with Sam to acquire Hazel another penny from the penny depot so she can spend it before giving it back to Bob. Bob disguises himself as a penny with a button Sam gives him, and she enters the Land of Luck by wearing Gerry, Bob’s leprechaun,’s clothing. Over the course of the expedition, Sam discovers that the Land of Luck controls ill luck.

Gerry employs a drone to find the missing penny on Earth after an incident at the Penny depot reveals Sam’s identity to him. But in the In-Between, an area halfway between the Good and Bad Luck realms, the drone becomes disoriented. Bob and Sam visit the In-Between, which is run by Jeff, a unicorn. Under Jeff’s supervision, the Randomizer, a device that releases both good and bad luck into Earth, is fed by the Bad Luck Apparat, a device that prevents unfavorable particles from adhering. Jeff says he is located the penny and put it back in the depot. Unfazed, Sam makes the decision to go see Babe, the dragon in charge of the good fortune, in the hopes of receiving one more cent. Before handing Sam a fresh cent, Babe reminds her how much nicer everything would be if everyone had good fortune. However, Sam gives up her penny to keep Bob from being banished once he is discovered to have faked his travel penny.

Sam and Bob, who still want to help Hazel, decide to turn off the Bad Luck Apparat for a while to keep bad luck from traveling to the Randomizer and give Hazel the advantage she needs to be adopted. But the bad luck specks begin to jam Jeff’s machinery and damage the good and bad luck stones inside the Randomizer, which in turn spreads bad luck over Earth and the Land of Luck.
