Tom Hanks, who also created the screenplay, stars in Aaron Schneider’s 2020 American war picture Greyhound.[5] The Good Shepherd, a 1955 novel by C. S. Forester, served as the basis for the movie, which centers on a US Navy commander serving as the head of a multinational escort destroyer group on his first duty, protecting an Allied convoy from U-boats during the Battle of the Atlantic. Elisabeth Shue, Rob Morgan, and Stephen Graham are also featured in the movie.
Sony Pictures Releasing had originally planned for Greyhound to open in theaters on June 12, 2020, in the United States. Due to massive disruption and shutdowns caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, the release was first postponed indefinitely before being canceled.
Apple TV+ purchased the distribution rights from Sony and on July 10, 2020, the movie was made available digitally. Critics gave it favorable reviews, praising the action scenes and efficient use of the film’s ninety minutes. The movie was nominated for a 93rd Academy Award in the Best Sound category.
Greyhound Plot
En route to Liverpool in February 1942, the Allied convoy HX-25, comprising 37 soldier and merchant ships, passes through the Mid-Atlantic gap, or “Black Pit,” where they will be beyond the reach of air cover for protection. The destroyers USS Keeling (fletcher class; radio call sign “Greyhound”), captained by US Navy Commander Ernest Krause, the British Tribal-class destroyer HMS James (call sign “Harry”), the Polish Grom-class destroyer ORP Viktor (call sign “Eagle”), and the Canadian Flower-class corvette HMCS Dodge (call sign “Dicky) make up the convoy’s escort. Despite his seniority and significant naval training, Krause is the overall commander of the escort ships, but this is his first command during a war; the captains serving under him have been engaged in combat for more than two years.
After three days in the “Black Pit”, a German signal is intercepted by high-frequency direction finding, and Greyhound spots a U-boat approaching the convoy. When the sub tries to go beneath Greyhound, Krause uses a full pattern of depth charges to sink it. A Greek merchant ship is sunk by another U-boat with a grey wolf insignia as they make their way back. Greyhound is attacked as well, but manages to dodge the torpedo with skill. Five more U-boats are reported to Greyhound by the other escorts; a wolfpack is waiting for nightfall, when the escorts will have limited sight, and is staying just out of firing range.

The close range causes slight damage to Dicky, while the deck gun of the U-boat hits Greyhound on its port side. George Cleveland, a mess attendant, and two sailors perish. The Germans sink an additional Allied ship during their funeral, severely damaging Eagle before it sinks; Krause permits the Eagle’s crew to flee ship. Despite his concerns about endangering the remaining defenders, Krause decides to break radio silence and instructs the Admiralty to receive the word “help” only. ‘Expect aircraft’ and ‘point X-ray’ are deciphered from a return transmission, indicating that reinforcements are being sent and that their meeting point must be adjusted.
As the convoy approaches air cover, Greyhound engages in combat with two U-boats. The “Grey Wolf” is submerged by Greyhound following fierce combat.
As the convoy approaches air cover, Greyhound engages in combat with two U-boats. Greyhound sinks the “Grey Wolf” with a full broadside during intense battle. When the British RAF Coastal Command’s Catalina arrives, Greyhound shoots to indicate where the second U-boat is so that the flying boat can dump its depth charges and sink it. The commander of the relief escorts, HMS Diamond, arrives and relieves Greyhound and the other two destroyers of duty, ordering them to port for repair and refit in Derry after determining that communication with the remaining U-boats has been lost. Krause is commended for the four U-boat kills. The crew and passengers of the convoy ships applaud Greyhound’s crew once he establishes the new course. When Krause returns to his cabin, he at last sleep.

Greyhound Release Date
Greyhound was first slated to be released in theaters in the United States on March 22, 2020 by Sony Pictures Releasing under the Columbia Pictures banner. The Covid 19 pandemic’s abrupt start and interruption caused the release to be postponed twice, first to May 8, 2020, and again to June 12, 2020.
While filming Elvis for Warner Bros. in March 2020, Hanks was diagnosed with COVID-19.
Greyhound’s distribution rights were purchased by Apple TV+ for roughly $70 million in May 2020; upon the film’s premiere, Stage 6 Films remained the only Sony distributor. On July 10, 2020, Apple TV+ launched the movie on digital platforms.
According to Apple, the movie had the greatest opening weekend of any program in the history of the platform. Last Day The figures, according to Hollywood, were “commensurate with a summer theatrical box office big hit”. Variety stated in November that as of that time, the movie was the 24th most watched straight-to-streaming release of 2020.

Greyhound trailer
The trailer for the film Greyhound begins with menacing images of the Atlantic’s murky and treacherous waters. “One battlefield held the key … to victory or defeat,” the sentence continues. Then, Commander Krause is presented to us. Evelyn, played by Elizabeth Shue, congratulates him on receiving his first command. But wow, what a job Krause has: he must steer his ship into combat against sly U-boats that are trying to sink the Allied convoy.
Greyhound movie reviews
Reviews for Greyhound are mostly positive, yet there are some criticisms of the visual effects. Here is a sample of the comments made by film critics:
Greyhound felt like a film that was intended to be epic but was unable to summon the required intensity, according to the New York Times. It is ultimately one of Hanks’s most meaningless films as a result.”
Entertainment Weekly: “Greyhound will undoubtedly be catnip for a certain number of dads — intoxicated on Dunkirk, still high on 1917 — Hanks himself being Dad over all, after all. The movie is drenched in Greatest Generation shine, much more so than those other recent releases.
AV Club: “The movie’s ubiquitous visual effects aren’t as convincing as its depiction of the crew, but its competently defined sense of scale keeps the ships and submarines from looking like glorified digital bath toys.”
The Los Angeles Times says that Greyhound is a well-made and gratifying combat movie. In that sense, Hanks and the other cast member deliver remarkably subtle performances that support a new interpretation of well-known themes.”

Tom Hanks has written and starred in a new war drama.
In his most recent film, which highlights one of the pivotal battlegrounds of the war, Tom Hanks returns to a Second World War scenario.
The Battle of the Atlantic, in which the Germans and the Allies fought nonstop for six years to guarantee that vital supplies could reach the UK, is brought to life on film like never before in Greyhound.
Based on a novel by CS Forester, Hanks is not only the star of this war movie but also wrote the screenplay. It will premiere this summer on Apple TV+.
When is Greyhound released on Apple TV+?
Greyhound will arrive exclusively on Apple TV+ on Friday 10th July.
The movie was supposed to hit theaters in June 2020, but Apple negotiated a $70 million contract to stream it exclusively on its streaming service after the coronavirus outbreak forced theater closures worldwide.
Despite not having a theatrical release, Greyhound will still be eligible for an Academy Award because to a temporary rule modification. If the critics find it appealing, that is.
What is Greyhound about?
In the 1942 film Greyhound, Tom Hanks plays US Navy Commander Ernest Krause, who is dispatched to one of the most dangerous theaters of World War II as a destroyer’s commander for the first time.
He is to lead a convoy of 37 Allied ships across the North Atlantic on board the USS Keeling (also known as “greyhound”) as a group of German U-boats is pursuing them closely.
Krause and his crew will be put to the ultimate endurance test, one that will force him to face both their opponents and personal demons out on the broad waters.
Is Greyhound a true story?
The Good Shepherd, a 1955 fictitious military novel by CS Forester, served as the inspiration for Greyhound.
Krause and his crew’s story are therefore fictional, while it draws considerable inspiration from historical events that occurred during the six-year Battle of the Atlantic, which lost the lives of 80,000 allied soldiers.
