Killers of the Flower Moon: release date, cast, storyline, trailer release, and everything you need to know.
Leonardo DiCaprio is starring in Martin Scorsese’s next Western murder drama Killers of the Flower Moon, and the most recent updates about the film are teasing yet another critical success for both. With The Wolf of Wall Street, Scorsese returned to the crime genre with a hint of black comedy after trying something different with the fantasy film Hugo. However, with the historical drama Silence, he again left the genre behind. After The Irishman came out and brought him back together with several of his regular acting partners (Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel). Martin Scorsese’s next film is an epic-scale criminal thriller called Killers of the Flower Moon, which is very different from anything he has done before.
But because it is a Western directed by Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon isn’t your typical crime drama. Leonardo DiCaprio, another of Scorsese’s longtime collaborators, reunites with him in the film. After collaborating on Gangs of New York in 2002, DiCaprio and Scorsese have since collaborated five times, most notably on The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street. As the Killers of the Flower Moon news hinting at the film before its 2023 release date indicates, the film will also reunite the Scorsese-De Niro team in a narrative that ideally suits the director’s aesthetic.

Since AppleTV+ is financing Killers of the Flower Moon, the film will also be available for viewing on the streaming service. The Cannes Film Festival hosted the world premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon. With 64 reviews, Killers of the Flower Moon presently holds a “fresh” 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it a critical smash.
The Times review by Kevin Maher is the most scathing of the few unfavorable evaluations that have been documented. Maher stated, “The script, from Forrest Gump’s Eric Roth, begins to meander badly, dropping in and out of the murder narrative and ultimately saddling us with a villain in De Niro who’s not nearly villainous enough and a protagonist in DiCaprio who’s a borderline moron.”
Back in 2016, it was announced that Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Martin Scorsese will be helming the adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon. The film was first picked out to be created.
Killers Of the Flower Moon Cast
The Killers of the Flower Moon cast went through some minor changes during pre-production. The character of Tom White, the FBI agent who leads the investigation, was written for Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up), but he asked to have his role changed to that of Ernest Burkhart. Jesse Plemons (The Irishman) was then cast as Tom White and DiCaprio as Ernest, and they are joined in the Killers of the Flower Moon cast by Robert De Niro (Amsterdam) as William Hale and Lily Gladstone (Billions) as Mollie Burkhart.
Tantoo Cardinal (Dances with Wolves) will play Lizzie Q, and Jason Isbell (A Star is Born) takes on the role of Bill Smith in the Killers of the Flower Moon cast. Sturgill Simpson (The Hunt) plays Henry Grammer, and Tatanka Means (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) will be John Wren. Academy Award-winning actor Brendan Fraser (The Whale) was a last-minute addition to the Killers of the Flower Moon cast, and he will be taking on the part of lawyer WS Hamilton. John Lithgow (Love is Strange) was also a late addition and will be playing Prosecutor Leeward.

Killers Of the Flower Moon Trailer
It is noteworthy to note that, although being completely fictional, Ernest and Mollie’s romance plays a major role in the plot of the most recent Killers of the Flower Moon trailer. That is why Killers of the Flower Moon, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, has an atmosphere reminiscent of the Titanic. Robert De Niro is also prominently featured in the teaser, virtually taking on the role of a villain. In addition to the other prominent members of the Killers of the Flower Moon cast, Brendan Fraser is seen making a reappearance, while Jesse Plemons plays the law enforcement official who is interviewing Burkhart.
Without delving too further into the narrative, the Killers of the Flower Moon clip highlights the vast scope of Scorsese’s most recent work. In the opening teaser, slow-motion and ominous music hint that this happy moment will not last long as Osage people dance and celebrate while oil bursts from the soil. The footage from Killers of the Flower Moon then delves into the uncomfortable cultural confrontations between the wealthy white folks who come to take advantage of their oil-rich region and the Oscar winners. “Can you spot the wolves in this picture?” is uttered repeatedly by Burkhart as the footage becomes more violent and tense.

How Historically Accurate Is the New Martin Scorsese Movie
Jim Gray, who recently addressed the historical correctness of the film Killers of the Flower Moon, is a direct descendant of Henry Roan, one of the murder victims of the Osage murders featured in the film. Gray praised Killers of the Flower Moon for its historical authenticity and consideration for actual Indigenous cultures in a series of laudatory tweets. “The script was rewritten during the shutdown caused by the pandemic in 2020,” Gray said, having worked with Scorsese and seen Killers of the Flower Moon behind closed doors. This also resulted in significant casting adjustments. With these modifications, the Osage became more central to the narrative than the FBI’s founding.
According to Gray, “The Chief appointed representatives to consult with the filmmakers and offered up the reservation to shoot the film on location, use our language speakers, hire our folks in front and behind the camera.” All of this is confirmed in the Killers of the Flower Moon Q&A from the Cannes Film Festival (via YouTube). “Language was beautifully spoken by all of the actors especially the non-Osage actors,” Gray added. This statement may be taken as a jab at De Niro, who supposedly gave the language his all.
Killers Of the Flower Moon Story Details
According to news sources about Killers of the Flower Moon, the movie is expected to closely adhere to the book. David Grann’s factual book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI served as the inspiration for the film. Grann examines a string of affluent Osage killings that occurred in Osage County, Oklahoma, in the early 1920s following the discovery of oil resources on their property in the book. The land’s administration had different plans as the Osage people got ready to receive the riches to which they were legally entitled from the sales of the oil resources.
Corporate interests and the local government had a history of strained relations with the Osage community, as will be explained in Killers of the Flower Moon. They reasoned that by getting rid of the Osage people, who they saw as acting as the “middle man,” they could streamline their profit-mongering of the oil profits. Ernest Burkhart, William Hale’s nephew, was a major player in the plot to kill the Osage people, and Hale was one of the masterminds behind it. It is said that Scorcese has been in close collaboration with the Osage people even since Eric Roth’s Killers of the Flower Moon script was first conceived. Additionally, author David Grann gave the production high marks.
