Lee Dong-wook, Jo Bo-ah, and Kim Bum are the main cast members of the 2020 South Korean television drama Tale of the Nine-Tailed (Korean: 구미호뎐). [1] [2] From October 7 to December 3, 2020, every Wednesday and Thursday at 22:30 (KST), 16 episodes of it were broadcast on TVN.
To ensure better production for the final four episodes, the series took a one-week hiatus on November 18, 2020. In its place, a behind-the-scenes special called Tale of the Nine Tailed: A 600-Year Legend (Korean: 구미호뎐-600년의 전설; RR: Gumihodyeon – 600nyeon-ui jeonseol) was broadcast.
A three-part spin-off titled Tale of the Nine Tailed: An Unfinished Story (Korean: 구미호뎐: 못다한 이야기; RR: Gumihodyeon: Motdahan i-yagi)[5] was also shown from November 18 to December 4. The plot revolves around Lee Yeon’s younger brother Lee Rang and his accomplice Ki Yu-ri.
On May 6, 2023, a second season of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 debuted. The female heroine, to be played by Kim So-yeon, and many new cast members, including Ryu Kyung-soo, were slated to reprise their roles with Lee Dong-wook and Kim Bum.

The almost 1000-year-old Gumiho Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook), who was formerly the mountain spirit that protected Baekdu-daegan, now lives in a city. He collaborates with Taluipa (Kim Jung-nan), the guardian of the Samdo River and an agent of the Afterlife Immigration Office, to exterminate supernatural entities that pose a threat to the realm of mortals. He resides in the city with the help of Goo Shin-joo, a veterinarian, fellow Gumiho, and his devoted subject (Hwang Hee).
He is on a quest to apprehend a fox that has killed and consumed the livers of several humans and is now weddng a man under the pretence of a human lady when Nam Ji-ah (Jo Bo-ah), a cunning, fierce, and fearless producer at TVC Station, spots him.
As Yeon leaves the event, Ji-ah recognises him, and later, she sees him on camera via his brightly coloured, red umbrella. After locating Yeon’s residence and developing suspicions about his supernatural abilities, she decides to test her theory by leaping from his apartment while carrying a memory chip that plays a clip of Yeon using his powers to battle another fox (Lee Rang, his half-brother), compelling Yeon to pursue and rescue her.
Then it is revealed that Nam Ji-ah was engaged in a car accident when she was a youngster, on her ninth birthday, in which her parents were supposedly killed. Only Ji-ah, nevertheless, is aware that two non-human entities pretended to be her parents. Ji-ah was in danger of being eaten by foxes, but Lee Yeon saved her. The enchantment did not work on her, even if he forced her to forget him. She later found herself near the scene of the accident, but her parents’ remains were never located.
It inspired her to think that her parents could still be alive, and she made the decision to research paranormal entities and search for any means of locating and rescuing her parents.
It is revealed later in the series that Nam Ji-ah is the human reincarnation of Ah-eum, Yeon’s first love.
While attempting to protect Yeon from Imoogi, a malicious earth dragon who desired to take on the form of the guardian mountain spirit, she was killed by him. Heartbroken, Yeon used his abilities to halt the boat that was bringing Ah-eum over the Samdo River. He then handed her a fox bead, kissed her, and asked her to vow that she would be reborn.
Yeon saw many Ah-eum impersonators throughout the decades, but none of them had the fox bead.
The plot develops as Lee Yeon struggles to control his increasing feelings for Nam Ji-ah in spite of the fact that she doesn’t have a fox bead, as he digs into why Ji-ah shares Ah-appearance eum’s and mannerisms, and as he reacts when he realises that she is, in fact, his first love.
Yeon’s half-brother Lee Rang (Kim-Bum), who felt abandoned when Yeon left his position as the guardian mountain spirit to work with Taluipa in exchange for Ah-rebirth, eum’s is another issue Yeon must handle in the meantime. Rang is extremely resentful of his brother for standing guard over the mountain and selecting Ah-eum above him. In collaboration with Ki Yoo-ri (Kim Yong-ji). He consistently causes harm to people in an effort to enrage his brother.
The likewise reincarnated earth dragon is put to this mixture. Now that Imoogi is back, he wants Ji-heart ah’s as well as Yeon’s body.
The rest of the story revolves around how the fierce production director and nine-tailed mountain spirit will protect their love, mend the broken hearts around them, and defeat the hellish creature that craves their bodies, hearts, and lives, all while a plethora of humans, demons, and supernatural beings stand in the way of their reunion.
Cast
Lee Yeon, played by Lee Dong-wook The gumiho in question (nine-tailed fox). Former mountain ghost, Ji-half-brother, ah’s Ah-lover, eum’s and protector of Baekdudaegan. He searches for Ah-reincarnation eum’s while carrying out duties from the Afterlife Immigration Office. He saw other Ah-eum impersonators, but none of them had the fox bead. Yeon believes Ji-ah is not Ah-reincarnation eum’s since he saved her in her youth, but Ji-ah does not have the fox bead. It is revealed later in the series that Ji-ah is, in fact, Ah-reincarnation. eum’s When Lee Yeon pulled her from a structure, her fox bead materialised. The evening primrose that blooms over tombs is his vulnerability.
Lee Rang as Kim Bum In youth, Lee Joo-won was Lee Rang. A younger brother of Lee Yeon and a half-blood gumiho, who uses mischief to get revenge on his sibling. He purposefully hurts others, which then creates Yeon problems. He keeps his compassion for his sibling a secret while carrying a heavy grudge. His human mother left him in the Forest of the Hungry Ghosts when he was a little child. Yeon protected him from the ravenous spirits who assailed him there. He moved to the mountain to start again and had a happy life, following his brother. However, once Ah-eum passed away, Yeon abandoned Baekdudaegan and gave up his role as the mountain spirit, leaving Rang alone on the mountain and fueling the rising animosity toward Lee Yeon.
Jo Bo-ah portraying Yi Ah-eum/ Nam Ji-ah As a young Ji-ah or Ah-eum, Park Da-yeon Nam Ji-ah has worked as a producer at TVC Station for 30 years. She is the reincarnation of Yi Ah-eum, the seventh daughter of the Joseon King, whom Lee Yeon banished and who was formerly his girlfriend. She let the Imoogi abduct her instead, promising to take him to Yeon, in order to save her father, who was under the Imoogi’s control. Then, in order to save Lee Yeon from killing himself, she begged him to murder her. She is known for having two personalities after reincarnating as Nam Ji-ah; these are subsequently identified as the remnants of the Imoogi that endured inside her.
