About Kaingang

The Kaingang people, also known as caingangue in Portuguese or kanhgág in the Kaingang language, are an Indigenous ethnic group in Brazil that is dispersed over the southeast state of São Paulo, the three southern Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and Santa Catarina. Although the Kaingang and Aweikoma (Xokleng) are today recognised as distinct groups, they are also known by the names Caingang and Aweikoma. The initial occupants of Argentina’s Misiones area were the Kaingang people. Their language and culture are very different from those of the Guaraní who live nearby.

According to some sources, including Juracilda Veiga and ethnographic registers (José Francisco Tomás do Nascimento 1886, Telêmaco Borba 1908, etc.), Kaingang groups have a crucial relationship with the land where they were born and where their ancestors are buried. It has been stated that the Kaingang rarely live long in one place, which causes them to move around a lot. The Jê family of languages includes the Kaingang language.
