T20 World cup 2024

The ninth T20 World Cup, a biannual Twenty20 International (T20I) competition played by men’s national teams and organised by the International Cricket Council, will take place in 2024. (ICC). The United States and the West Indies are slated to co-host it from June 1 to June 29, 2024. Matches from the inaugural ICC World Cup event will take place in the US. After defeating Pakistan in the previous edition’s championship match, England is the reigning champion.

Twenty teams will compete in the event, up from the 16 teams who participated in the 2022 competition. The top eight teams from the previous competition, as well as the following two teams in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, automatically qualified in addition to the two hosts. A regional qualification method was used to determine the final eight teams. Canada, Uganda, and the United States have all qualified for the T20 World Cup for the first time.

CWI started a comprehensive bidding process in May 2023 seeking nations in the Caribbean and the US interested to host World Cup matches. Four American locations were nominated by ICC in July 2023: Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Morrisville’s Church Street Park, Fort Lauderdale’s Central Broward Park, and New York (Van Cortlandt Park). Following complaints by Bronx residents and officials against the construction of a cricket stadium at Van Cortlandt Park, ICC chose to build the stadium at Eisenhower Park.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) officially announced on September 20, 2023, the selection of three U.S. locations for the 2023 World Cup: Lauderhill (Central Broward Park), Dallas (Grand Prairie Stadium), and New York (Eisenhower Park).  ICC decided to construct a temporary 34,000-seat modular stadium at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County, New York, and concurrently double the capacities of the current stadiums in Fort Lauderdale and Dallas through the use of modular stadium solutions to expand premium hospitality areas, media areas, and seating.

Seven Caribbean Island locations Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago will host matches, according to confirmation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) on September 22, 2023.

With Jamaican sports minister Olivia Grange disqualifying a candidacy due to financial concerns, Jamaica was the only Cricket West Indies member association not to submit a bid to host the World Cup.

It was announced in November 2023 that the World Cup would not be held at Trinidad’s most important cricket stadium, Queen’s Park Oval, and that instead, games will be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando. The Queen’s Park Cricket Club president, Nigel Camacho, said that warm-up matches will probably take place at the location prior to the main competition beginning.

The Dominican Republic’s government also made the decision to cancel all World Cup matches at Windsor Park, citing their incapacity to finish the venue’s infrastructure development in time for the competition. A group of ICC and CWI representatives completed a second inspection of the approved World Cup host nations in the Caribbean and host cities in the USA in December 2023. They also finalised the tournament’s schedule.

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, a modular stadium in New York City, was announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on January 17, 2024. It is anticipated to be completed by the end of May 2024.

Groups and certification

The two hosts and the top eight teams from the 2022 competition automatically advanced to the event. As of November 14, 2022, the top-ranked teams in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings that had not yet guaranteed a spot in the finals claimed the remaining two automatic qualification spots.

The eight spots that remained were filled through the ICC’s regional qualifications, which included one team each from the Americas and East Asia-Pacific groups, as well as two teams each from Africa, Asia, and Europe. The ICC validated the sub-regional qualification routes for Africa, East Asia-Pacific, and Europe in May 2022.

The first two teams to qualify were Scotland and Ireland from the Europe qualifier, and then Papua New Guinea from the East Asia-Pacific qualifier in July 2023. Following their victory against Bermuda in the Americas Qualifier final, Canada qualified in October 2023. The next month, Namibia and Uganda were the last two teams to qualify after guaranteeing a top-two finish in the Africa Qualifier, after Nepal and Oman had advanced to the final of the Asia Qualifier. Zimbabwe is now the only nation that does not qualify to play Test cricket.
