BAFTA Film Awards 2024
On January 18, IST, the nominees for BAFTA 2024 were revealed. With thirteen and eleven nominations, respectively, “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” are dominating the field. With nine nominations apiece, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest” are next in line. But only five people have nominated “Barbie.
The top 10 films, in order of nominations are:
- Thirteen candidates for Oppenheimer Eleven candidates for Poor Things Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest received nine nominations each. Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Maestro received seven nominations. There are six requests for All of Us Strangers. - won five Golden Globes and eight Critics Choice Awards, is nominated for best film, director, and adapted screenplay, among other honours. Murphy, its star, stated: “The British Academy’s recognition of so many of my Oppenheimer collaborators, particularly Chris Nolan, makes me very happy. It was an experience I will never forget working on the movie.”

In addition to being nominated for a supporting role, Robert Downey Jr. is the clear favourite to win an Oscar. Barbie, a movie about a doll’s feminist awakening, is the highest earning movie of 2023 and has received excellent reviews; yet, it was not nominated for best picture. Greta Gerwig was not selected for the best director shortlist, which only includes Justine Trite, a woman, for Anatomy of a Fall. Margot Robbie for best actress and Ryan Gosling for best supporting actor were among Barbie’s nominees.
The Zone of Interest’s Jonathan Glazer and All of Us Strangers’ Andrew Haigh, both from Britain, are among the other nominated filmmakers. In addition, The Zone of Interest is a nominee for best adapted screenplay and excellent British cinema. The movie, which is in German, centres on the life of a Nazi commander who resides close to the Auschwitz concentration camp with his family. Paul Mescal, who co-starred in the romantic fantasy movie All of Us Strangers, was nominated for an acting award; CoStar Andrew Scott was not. Along with Wonka and Napoleon, the movie is nominated for finest British film as well.

Which actors have received nominations?
Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, a biographical film about American conductor Leonard Bernstein, has earned him nominations for best leading actor and best director. Carey Mulligan, who is nominated for best main actress, plays Felicia Montealegre, the actress with whom Bernstein is in a romantic connection. Rosamund Pike and Jacob Elrodi are nominated for supporting parts, and Barry Keoghan of Saltburn has also made it onto the best actor shortlist. The psychological thriller directed by Emerald Fennell is also a nominee for best British film. The narrative, which has generated controversy due to its graphic scenes, centres on a rich college student who brings a buddy home for the summer. Additionally, Elordi is a nominee for the EE Bafta Rising Star Award, which honours young talent with promise. Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, and Teo Yoo for Past Lives are the other finalists for best actor.
Emma Stone, who starred in Poor Things, is a nominee for main actress.
Stone portrays Bella, a lady revived by an unusual scientist using her unborn child’s brain. However, Yorgos Lanthimos was not nominated for best director despite the movie receiving eleven nominations. Sandra Huller, a German actress, is nominated twice: once for supporting actress in The Zone of Interest and once for lead actress in Anatomy of a Fall. For the British romantic comedy Rye Lane, Vivian Oparah is the other nominated for main actress. She has never before received a Bafta nomination. Other first-time nominations include Davine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa for The Holdovers, and Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks for a new musical cinema adaptation of Alice Walker’s beloved 1982 novel The Colour Purple.
Who was left out?
Nine nominations are in the running for Killers of the Flower Moon, with Robert De Niro receiving one in the supporting actor category—the actor’s first acting nomination in thirty-three years. The eighty-year-old American actor is a three-time Bafta winner.
However, the main actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, as well as the director of the epic movie Martin Scorsese, were left off the list. Gladstone, who is a favourite for the Oscars, became the first Native American actress to win the Golden Globe for best actress in January.
The British film One Life, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as a stockbroker who, in the years leading up to World War Two, helped save 669 largely Jewish children from the Nazis, was not nominated. The Bafta Film Awards 2024 will be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Centre on February 18, 2024. David Tennant will serve as the ceremony’s host.
The 38 films nominated by BAFTA voters today encompass an astonishing diversity of genres and storylines,” stated Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA. This year’s field is exceptionally competitive. More entries meant that our voting members had an especially difficult time choosing. The highly praised films of the year, as well as those that have not yet been released and seen by public, are among the films and brilliant individuals nominated.
