Life on Our Planet series release date

Life On Our Planet, a documentary series from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and Silverback Films (Our Planet II, Wild Isles), will be available on Netflix and tell the tale of life’s battle to survive on Earth.

Life On Our Planet will employ cutting-edge technology, similar to Apple TV Plus’s docuseries Prehistoric Planet, to bring some of prehistory’s most stunning predators and ancient species back to life on our screens. But the series won’t only focus on the past; it will also give us an up-close and personal look at every significant animal dynasty that has ever inhabited Earth, right up to the present.

This must-see exploration of the amazing organisms that call this planet home is brought to you by Steven Spielberg, Morgan Freeman, and Industrial Light & Magic (yep, the VFX team behind Star Wars and many other recent blockbusters).

The goal of “Life on Our Planet,” a new natural history series from Netflix and Steven Spielberg, is to provide a serialised, “binge-watch” account of the full, dramatic history of life on Earth.

The eight episodes of the programme, which begins streaming internationally on Wednesday, take viewers through Earth’s five past major extinction catastrophes, each of which is reenacted using computer-generated visual effects.

Life has always managed to survive every terrible catastrophe that has been hurled at it over four billion years, from harsh ice ages to meteorites, as Morgan Freeman’s commentary reminds us.

Each time, the species who survive the devastation engage in a “Game of Thrones”-style struggle for supremacy, except this time it’s between vertebrates and invertebrates, or reptiles and mammals, rather than Starks and Lannister’s.

The chosen, however, are sometimes improbable heroes tenacious survivors, like the peculiarly shaped Aran aspis fish, who seize the opportunity to shine while bigger ocean animals stumble and change the course of existence.

According to visual effects supervisor Jonathan Privett, Aran aspis “is a little terrible, it’s odd… But it’s in (the show), because it has a really vital function” in evolution.

Tapster continued, “One of the things I really appreciate about that scene is also that Aran aspis has just a tinge of ‘ET’ about him.

Around four billion years. Many species. There were five mass extinctions (and counting, but more on that later). Life on our planet tells the tale of the continual emergence and extinction of life on earth, from the cataclysmic occurrences that have altered our ecosystems to the organisms that have endured (or perished) along the way. Because life always manages to find a way, yet as this eight-part epic adventure demonstrates, the path from a single-celled living form to the biodiversity we know today wasn’t without its share of drama.

Life on Our Planet, a television series produced by Silverback Films and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, uses the most recent advances in palaeontology and graphics technology to bring long-extinct creatures back to life. The programme frames the history of the planet through the lens of its five mass extinction events to date and explores the implications for modern life.

Producer of the Silverback series Keith Scholey said to Netflix’s Queue, “By understanding our history, we can assist build our future. The sixth mass extinction that we are presently experiencing is the first one that was caused by an animal and the first one that may be entirely avoided.
