The American sports comedy-drama television series Ted Lasso (/ˈlaesoʊ/ LASS-oh) was founded by Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly. The show is based on a character that Sudeikis played in a number of advertisements for NBC Sports’ Premier League coverage of England.[1] The program centres on Ted Lasso, an American college football coach recruited to take charge of an English soccer club whose owner privately believes his lack of expertise would cause it to fail. However, under Ted’s colourful and optimistic leadership, this team miraculously goes well.

The recently divorced Rebecca Welton takes over as the new owner of the fictitious AFC Richmond, a Premier League team that is having financial difficulties. As the one thing her ex-husband ever liked, Rebecca decides to ruin the club by hiring the ineptest coach she can find in order to get revenge on him for cheating on her countless times and never being held accountable for it. Ted Lasso, a college football coach from Wichita, Kansas, is hired by her to achieve this goal. Ted has never played soccer, but he did just coach an NCAA Division II football team to a championship. When he and Coach Beard arrive in Richmond, he tries to make friends with his new teammates by bringing his upbeat, folkloric charm, but the squad still despises him.

He soon discovers that there is conflict in the locker room between the team’s elderly star, Roy Kent, and conceited young player, Jamie Tartt. Ted throws Sam Obisanya a birthday celebration despite the fact that the squad had lost earlier in the day since he notices that another player is homesick for Nigeria. Ted goes to Keeley, Jamie’s model girlfriend, for guidance in an attempt to win Jamie over. Ted heeds her advice and praises.

Ted and Keeley go to Rebecca after learning that pictures of them are published in the tabloid daily The Sun. She stops their publication out of concern that they would be linked to her, but in return Ted gets to spend the day with The Independent’s tough reporter Trent Crimm. Arriving doubtful is Crimm. At a school function in the area, Ted, Crimm, and Roy attend and win over the kids. Roy approaches Jamie and a few other players who have been harassing Nate, hesitantly but firmly. Ted extends an invitation to Crimm to supper at the eatery run by the man who collected him from the airport. Ted, who has never tried Indian food before, orders a lot of hot food, which he consumes all in courtesy. Crimm’s complimentary article on the “Lasso Way” infuriates Rebecca.

The next time the squad loses, Roy and Jamie get into even more arguments. Rebecca relies on Higgins to locate a different musical act after learning that Robbie Williams abruptly canceled on her when she was getting ready for the yearly charity gala. Keeley is always on edge because of Roy and Jamie’s continual conflict. After arriving, Rebecca’s ex-husband Rupert Mannion takes charge of the auction. Ted surmises that Robbie Williams’ cancellation to humiliate Rebecca was Rupert’s idea while attempting to diffuse the conflict between Roy and Jamie. Later on, as a result of their friendship, Rebecca persuades Keeley to stop seeing Jamie.

Jamie and Roy reconcile and decide to stop fighting. In lieu of Williams, Ted introduces Higgins to a street performer he had seen previously, to Higgins’ enthusiastic welcome. Rebecca gets wasted with Keeley and takes off in a rickshaw, furious at Rupert’s unexpected entrance (and the fact that he gave a million pounds to the charity event to show her up).

After sorting things out, Roy and Jamie decide to stop fighting. As a substitute for Williams, Ted gives Higgins a street performer he has seen before; he is well received. After getting wasted with Keeley, Rebecca, furious by Rupert’s unexpected visit (and the fact that he gave a million pounds to the charity event to see her there), takes a rickshaw ride to go.

When Ted’s wife Michelle and son Henry do show up, the family enjoys some great time together until Ted discovers Michelle crying. She tells him that she doesn’t love him anymore and doesn’t know why, even though she really hopes this isn’t the case. She vows to persevere in trying nevertheless. Keeley shows up for a photo session she set up for Jamie’s promotion. Keeley convinces Rebecca and Roy that her relationship with Jamie is finished, despite their apparent concerns that she is wasting her time with him.

Because Jamie won’t pass the ball to his teammates and scores goals on his own when playing, supporters and pundits have come to assume that Jamie is the only player who can carry AFC Richmond. Just before halftime, Ted realizes how detrimental this is to the team’s spirit and sits Jamie, which draws severe condemnation from the supporters. Ted, unfazed, exhorts his group to accept change and have confidence in themselves. Together, the squad wins the match by breaking the 2–2 deadlock. Along with the squad, Ted, Beard, and Nate celebrate. Later that night, Ted bids Michelle and their kid goodnight and tells her that she doesn’t have to attempt to save their marriage for him.

Ted finds it difficult to deal emotionally with his marriage ending, but Richmond’s first victory gives him hope. The media still treats Rebecca poorly, referring to her as “Old Rebecca” when Bex—whose real name is Rebecca—begins dating Rupert. Jamie and Ted are still at odds about his position on the squad, but as Dani Rojas, a driven rookie who is just as talented as he is, enters the group, Jamie feels less of an influence. After Dani sustains an unexplained injury, the two develop a rivalry, and Ted finds out that the team’s recovery centre is haunted by spirits. Ted asks the crew to sacrifice something meaningful to them in order to break the curse; after hearing Keeley’s motivational speech, Jamie even agrees to participate.

AFC Richmond is playing their rivals Everton, a team they haven’t been able to defeat for the previous sixty years, in Liverpool. Keeley goes with Rebecca to the game to lift her spirits because it falls on the weekend of Rebecca and Rupert’s wedding anniversary. Flo “Sassy” Collins, an old friend of Rebecca’s, greets them and instantly takes a shine to Ted. Ted gets drunk and lashes out at Nate that evening because he doesn’t want to sign the divorce papers. Ted apologizes the next morning and requests that Nate express a few of his thoughts. The squad wins after Nate delivers an energizing, although offensive, pregame speech.

Rebecca shows off her amazing singing voice as the crew goes out to a karaoke club that evening to celebrate. Rebecca catches Ted as he stumbles out of the building, having tried to enjoy the evening, but he is having a panic attack. Sassy pays Ted a visit at his hotel room as he withdraws. After kissing Keeley, Roy quickly walks out. In her room, Rebecca amuses a hotel server.

Ted refers to Beard, Nate, and Higgins as the “Diamond Dogs” when discussing his problems with Sassy. Roy turns down Keeley’s invitation to grab coffee. When Jamie pays Keeley a visit later that evening, she invites him to remain. Afterwards, when Keeley tells Roy that she had an affair with Jamie, Roy speaks with Ted, who, together with the Diamond Dogs, gives Roy an alternative viewpoint. Ted agrees to assist Rebecca when she meets other minority team owners at a pub later that day. Ted thanks Rebecca for helping him during his panic episode. Rupert unexpectedly reveals to Rebecca there that he assisted Bex, who is now engaged to him, in acquiring the minority stake.

Ted responds by wagering on a game of darts with Rupert, which he wins, much to Rebecca’s joy. A paparazzi snaps a picture of Keeley and Roy kissing while heading to dinner, but Roy snatches the photographer’s memory card. Higgins begs Rebecca to quit damaging the team the following morning at her office. Then, after seeing the photo of Rebecca and Ted that was supposed to appear in The Sun on the camera card, Keeley bursts into the office, having learned of Rebecca’s scheme. In the event that Rebecca doesn’t do it first, she swears to notify Ted.

Ted has still not heard from Rebecca on her attempts to undermine the squad. On the field, Roy is displaying his advanced age, and there are calls to bench him. Ted’s refusal to comply causes him to become aloof from Nate and Beard. Rebecca tries to tell Ted after being prodded by Keeley, but she is unable to. Shortly later, Rupert arrives to inform her that he and Bex are expecting a child. To Rebecca’s amazement, Ted readily pardons her after she storms down to his office and confesses. Ted informs Roy that he will bench him. Roy goes to Keeley, feeling deceived, and Keeley reminds him he’s more than just a football player.

Ted has forgiven Rebecca, so she goes to see Higgins and apologizes; Higgins then comes back to the club. Ted reiterates in the bar that he doesn’t care who wins. However, Beard furiously informs Ted that he and the players value winning and that they are professionals, not student-athletes. Ted encounters Roy outside the bar, and they converse. In order to save Roy the humiliation of a benching, they agree to say he is injured and Roy acknowledges his advanced age. Roy surprises Ted at the following session by showing up and sporting a second team pinny, embracing his new position and still serving as the team’s leader as they get closer to their last game.

Richmond is thus demoted to the Championship League. Heartbroken by the outcome, Ted tries to lift everyone’s spirits by sharing some counsel he gave Sam early in the season and assuring them that they will succeed as a team. Ted orders Coach Beard to send Jamie an envelope with a note complimenting him on the extra pass and a toy soldier to watch after him after witnessing Jamie’s father berating him for missing the score. Ted tries to quit during their meeting with Rebecca, but she rejects him. Instead, they plan to win the Premier League when they return and earn promotion the next season.

The episode opens in the middle of the Richmond team’s seven-game winning streak. Dani kills Richmond’s greyhound mascot, Earl, by mistake as he gets about to kick a game-winning penalty, and the remorse he feels from it prevents him from playing. Sports psychologist Sharon Fieldstone is hired by Richmond to assist Dani get over his “yips,” but Ted finds her strict and orderly ways off-putting. Dani is excited about football again after seeing Sharon, and during practice he scores a goal from a corner kick. Consequently, more players start asking Sharon for sessions. In the meantime, Keeley is dating Roy, who recently retired, and Roy is coaching an Under 9 Girls Football team. Jamie seems to be a competitor on Lust Conquers All, a reality show modelled after Love Island.

Roy’s strong swearing offends some of his fellow experts, but the audience responds well to his opinion, and the network invites him back. Ted reconsiders admitting Jamie to the squad because he wants to give him another chance. He also asks the Diamond Dogs what they think. Beard and Nate vote against the addition, while Higgins votes in Favor of it. Keeley hears Roy acknowledge that he had fun being on the show. The players are confused when Jamie returns to Richmond.

Even though Jamie has made an effort to express regret for his previous actions, the team does not accept his comeback. Jamie pays Sharon a visit as advised by Keeley. Nora, a goddaughter of Rebecca and Sassy, pays Rebecca a visit and spends the day at work. Sam takes part in a picture shoot for the team’s sponsor, Dubai Air, but he subsequently finds out from his father that the airline is controlled by an oil firm that pollutes Nigeria, Sam’s native country. He pulls out of the advertisement campaign, which puts pressure on Rebecca at Dubai Air to dismiss Sam. However, Rebecca refuses to budge at Nora’s insistence.

Sam, along with fellow Nigerian players Isaac and Winchester, hide the Dubai Air emblems on their jerseys with tape during Richmond’s subsequent game in protest. Jamie sets an example for the other members of the squad. During the postgame news conference, Ted allows Sam to talk about the corruption in the Nigerian government and the misbehaviour of Dubai Air. Jamie raises a glass to Sam’s bravery, and they make up.

After Ted’s fruitless attempt to speak with Henry and Michelle over the phone on Christmas Day, he gets depressed and begins to drink. Presuming Ted could feel isolated during his first Christmas after the divorce, Rebecca invites him to help distribute gifts to the most fortunate kids in the community. Phoebe’s classmate is tormenting her because of her foul breath, Roy and Keeley find out. They identify the antihistamine Phoebe takes for a cat allergy as the source of the issue and take her to use handwritten posters to reconcile with her bully. Foreign players who are unable to see their families at home are invited to a Christmas celebration hosted by Higgins and his family.

For his parents’ anniversary, Nate hesitantly tries to reserve a window seat at their preferred restaurant, but is unsuccessful. Nate successfully secures the window reservation after learning from Rebecca and Keeley how to be more forceful and self-assured. Rebecca finds interest in her new partner on the anonymous dating app Bantr, which Keeley and Richmond’s new sponsor also possess. Richmond is still having trouble, partly because team captain Isaac’s nervousness interferes with his ability to lead.

To assist him, Roy takes him and Ted to a field close to his old home, where he plays pickup football with the local football players and tells Isaac to enjoy himself. As Roy watches a rekindled Isaac on the field during his Soccer Saturday presentation, he becomes aware of how much he misses playing the game. Much to Nate’s dismay and the cheers of the Richmond fans, he leaves the broadcast suddenly and heads to the stadium to join Ted’s coaching team.

Rebecca’s mother pays her a visit; she recently broke up with her father. Ted is informed by Rebecca that her parents had been divorced and then reunited on a few occasions. Ted and Roy counsel Higgins not to express his concerns, and Beard and Jane reconcile. With Roy as a coach, Richmond has unprecedented success; yet, Jamie is displeased because Roy declines to provide him coaching counsel. After some time, Roy gives in and tells Jamie that he must play more aggressively “when appropriate” and that the coaches would give him the signal when it’s acceptable.

Jamie scores the game’s first goal at halftime after all four coaches give him the finger during a tight FA Cup quarterfinal matchup against Tottenham Hotspur. The Spurs score to tie the game as the second half heats up and Ted unexpectedly gets a panic attack and exits the field, leaving Richmond in disarray. Nate comes in without Ted and orders a triple substitution, which gives Richmond the game-winning goal. Ted is at Sharon’s office, pleading for assistance.

Ted and Sharon had two unsuccessful sessions at initially. After couples therapy failed to rescue his marriage, he rushes out of the second, expressing his disdain for psychotherapy and his cynicism about it. He quits the first nearly quickly. On the third appointment, though, Ted chooses to fully commit to the treatment process and apologizes for his outburst. Roy starts to spend as much time as possible with Keeley, causing her to feel overly confined. When Roy finds out that Keeley has been complaining to Rebecca and others about his controlling behaviours, the two get into a fight.
