I Rewatched Breaking Bad, And My Feelings About Skyler White Have Changed Dramatically

Alright, pay attention. In all honesty, I don’t believe Skyler White from Breaking Bad is the villain you all believe her to be.

I wasn’t the one viewing the first season of Breaking Bad on television. Since I was in the fifth grade and it came out in 2008, I’m quite sure my parents would have killed me if they had known I was watching a program about drugs at the time. Naturally, though, when I started college, I made the decision to binge-watch it.

Despite having originated on AMC, this is without a doubt one of the greatest shows on Netflix for a marathon viewing session. The cast of Breaking Bad gives some of the greatest performances on TV ever, and the plot is unmatched. On every rewatch, there are still a ton of Breaking Bad moments that continue to wow me.

But as I watched it again, you know what I began to notice? that despite what everyone says, Skyler White isn’t actually that bad. Perhaps I just needed to mature before I could fully comprehend her, but now that we’re talking about it, I’m going to persuade you that she’s not the show’s antagonist after all, despite what everyone thinks.

To begin with, let me state that I used to detest Skylar.

To start with, let me clarify that this is not how I always thought. In actuality, like most people, I detested Skyler when I initially started watching this show.

To be fair, I was eighteen at the time and quite ignorant of the ways of the world, and I was literally learning how to prepare real food via YouTube cooking programs. Since I was hardly an adult myself, I didn’t really have the right to express my hatred at someone on a TV show that tackled such mature subjects.

However, even on my third and second rewatches at ages twenty and twenty-two, I still didn’t feel like I was learning more about Skyler’s personal life. I’ve always felt that her actions after learning what Walt was doing to support them were incredibly self-centered. It was unbelievable to me that she had slept with Ted when Walt was putting his life in danger to ensure their well-being.

Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman)

Introduced in the pilot for Breaking Bad, Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman was once meant to be killed off by Season 1’s end. However, Vince Gilligan and the show’s other creatives had the good sense to keep the character on, and it’s a very good thing they did. It’s hard to imagine what Breaking Bad would be without Jesse Pinkman, Walter White’s former student and drug-making accomplice, and it’s harder to imagine what the character would be without Paul’s astounding, Emmy-winning performance.

Breaking Bad was Aaron Paul’s breakthrough role after his previous appearances in Big Love, Van Wilder, Mission: Impossible III, and Veronica Mars. This led to lead roles in Smashed, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Eye in the Sky, Triple 9, Need for Speed, A Long Way Down, and Fathers and Daughters. Paul was the leader of The Path on Hulu after Breaking Bad. He also gave BoJack Horseman a voice.

I love watching television so much. I have been for years, and my love has only deepened with age. Even though I enjoy seeing the most surprising scenes from Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad is another show that I believe significantly changed the chemistry of my brain. Walt Destroys Tuco’s Place (Episode 6, Season 1) 
In all honesty, I believe that a significant portion of the series’ wild scenes started to occur halfway through the run, but both Seasons 1 and 2 had a good number of incredible moments. Walt initially demonstrates his willingness to take a chance on his life when he deceives Tuco into thinking he has brought him meth when, in fact, it is a crystal of fulminate mercury, which causes the major explosion. That sounds like it’s still in my head.

Jesse Escapes from Two Meth Addicts (Episode 6 of Season 2)

This entire “Peekaboo” episode is arguably one of Jesse Pinkman’s best parts, and it’s also one of Aaron Paul’s best acting scenes overall. This is the reason I have to mention that Jesse managed to hang on with two insane meth addicts until the very end; in fact, one of them killed the other out of a desperation to get money.

Walt Sees Hank Die (Episode 14 of Season 5)

“Ozymandias” is one of the best episodes of Breaking Bad, and for good reason—it’s arguably some of the best television ever produced. The scene where Walt witnesses Hank’s death after Jack Welker shoots him is one of the episode’s most important moments.
