Kacey Lee Musgraves is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who was born on August 21, 1988. She started her career in the early 2000s, putting out three solo albums on her own and recording an additional album with the duo Texas Two Bits. Musgraves participated in the fifth season of Nashville Star, a singing competition on the USA Network, in 2007 and placed seventh.  After she joined Mercury Nashville in 2012, she dropped the successful single “Merry Go ‘Round”. At the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, her major-label debut studio album, Same Trailer Different Park (2013), took home the Best Country Album Grammy.

The critically and financially successful singles “Biscuits” and “Dime Store Cowgirl” were taken from Musgraves’ second studio album, Pageant Material (2015), which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. A Very Kacey Christmas, an album with a Christmas theme, was also published by her in 2016. Golden Hour (2018), her fourth studio album, was widely praised by critics upon its release and went on to win four Grammy Awards, including Best Country Album and Album of the Year. “Space Cowboy” and “Butterflies,” the album’s first two singles, took home the Grammy Awards for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance, respectively. Star-Crossed (2021), Musgraves’ fifth studio album, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 album chart. Her appearance on Zach Bryan’s 2023 hit “I Remember Everything” earned her a Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Deeper Well, her sixth studio album, was made available in 2024.

Musgraves has won four Academy of Country Music Awards, seven Country Music Association Awards, and seven Grammy Awards during her career.

Early life

On August 21, 1988, Kacey Lee Musgraves was born.  in Golden, Texas to artist Karen (née Abrams) and M-Prints Printing, Inc., owner of a small printing company in Mineola, Texas, Craig Musgraves. According to Musgraves, she weighed just five pounds at birth and was born six weeks ahead of schedule. Kelly Christine Sutton (née Musgraves), Musgraves’ younger sister, is a photographer.

Musgraves began penning songs at the age of eight. Her first song was “Notice Me,” which she wrote for her primary school graduation. She began learning to play the mandolin before enrolling in guitar lessons at the age of 12 from a local musician named John DeFoore. She subsequently called this “one of the most important things that ever happened to me.” She picked up the harmonica as well.

Musgraves’ mother introduced her to local music festivals to sing western swing songs. She and fellow student Alina Tatum started the country music group Texas Two Bits, went on tour around Texas, put out an independent record in 2000, and were invited to play at the “Black Tie and Boots Inaugural Ball” for President George W. Bush. In addition, Musgraves won national yodeling competitions and was chosen to perform the country’s anthem during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Her first solo CD, self-released at the age of 14, was supported by her family. At the age of 18, she went to Austin, Texas after graduating from Mineola High School in 2006. Musgraves participated in Season 5 of the reality TV singing competition Nashville Star in 2007, finishing seventh overall.

Career

In 2002, 2003, and 2007, Musgraves created three albums under her own production. She recorded two tracks for independent record label Triple Pop in 2008 while residing in Austin. In 2010, she co-wrote the song “Oh, tonight” with the Josh Abbott Band. A downloadable EP featuring Musgraves’s two acoustic songs for Triple Pop (covers of Miley Cyrus’s “See You Again” and OneRepublic’s “Apologize”) was published in 2012. On February 15, 2014, “Apologize” (Acoustic Version) peaked at No. 23 in the Billboard Hot Singles Chart and received over 31,000,000 plays on Spotify. On March 30, 2018, Triple Pop released the “Acoustic Remixed” digital EP in honor of the 10-year milestone. This EP included freshly remixed and remastered versions of the same tracks.

In 2012, Musgraves traveled with Lady A on their Own the Night Tour, including stops in Europe. Her solo debut single “Merry Go ‘Round” was released in 2012 after she signed with Mercury Nashville. The song appears on her March 19, 2013, release of her major-label debut album Same Trailer Different Park, which was co-written and produced by Musgraves, Shane McAnally, and Luke Laird. The album sold 42,000 copies when it debuted at number two. Additional successful singles “Blowin’ Smoke” and “Follow Your Arrow” were generated by it. On their list of the 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time, Rolling Stone magazine ranked “Follow Your Arrow” at number 39 and referred to Musgraves as “one of the loudest symbols of young country musicians embracing progressive values.”

Co-written by Musgraves and Trent Dabbs, “Undermine” was included in one of the first episodes of the first season of Nashville on October 17, 2012.Mir anda Lambert’s 2013 single “Mama’s Broken Heart” featured harmony vocals from Musgraves, who also co-wrote the song.

At the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards in 2012, Musgraves was a nominee for four categories, including Female Vocalist of the Year. [Reference required] In addition, Musgraves tied Taylor Swift and Lorde for the most nominations garnered by a woman that year with her four Grammy nominations for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. Those nominees included “Mama’s Broken Heart” and “Merry Go ‘Round” for Best Country Song, Best New Artist, and Best Country Album (Same Trailer Different Park). Same Trailer Different Park took home the Grammy for Best Country Album, while “Merry Go ‘Round” took home the Best Country Song trophy.

Musgraves accompanied Willie Nelson and Alison Krauss on a few of their tour dates, as well as Katy Perry on the North American portion of her Prismatic World Tour. For Dierks Bentley’s 2013 album Riser, the lead single “Bourbon in Kentucky” featured backup vocals by Musgraves. For Same Trailer Different Park, Musgraves earned the 2014 Academy of Country Music album of the year award in April. She made her Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon debut with a new song she published in June 2014 called The Trailer Song. In August 2014, Same Trailer Different Park achieved gold certification after selling more than 500,000 copies.

The exclusive debut of her “Too Good to Be True” performance is available exclusively to PEOPLE before the entire concert streams on Apple Music and AppleTV+ on May 8 at 10 p.m. EST.

Musgraves released a statement regarding the performance, which was recorded at the same studio as a large portion of Deeper Well. “Being on hallowed ground, creating this intimate set with my incredible band was such a joy for me, and I can’t wait for you to enjoy it from the comfort of your own space,” the singer said.

The Grammy winner continued, “I hope you feel my heart and spirit in this show, too. Your spirits were in mind.”

Throughout her hour-long Apple Music Live performance, Musgraves plays a few songs from her 2018 album Golden Hour, a rendition of Bob Marley’s timeless “Three Little Birds,” and other songs from her Deeper Well collection.

When Deeper Well was released in March, Musgraves discussed the inspiration behind the album’s reflective songs in an interview with Kelleigh Bannen on Today’s Country Radio on Apple Music.

“It wasn’t inspired by a eureka moment; rather, I believe it was the result of growing older, relationships evolving, and friendships altering with time. After that, you learn a lot about yourself in therapy. At that moment, she stated, “And your kind of gathering these ideas, and they’re sort of making this broader picture.”

“And then, I believe, focusing on the minute details of all of that… It feels incredibly exposed and heated. Plenty of open area is present. For me, it truly gets right to the heart of the human experience,” Musgraves continued. “And this record is organic, human as f—, in my opinion. It has roots in nature, I believe. However, the document has a few contemporary tidbits scattered throughout.”
