Following the release of Masters of the Air, The Bloody Hundredth, a new documentary celebrating the actual heroes of the 100th Bomb Group, will be available to view on Apple TV+.

The Bloody Hundredth, which is narrated by Tom Hanks and produced by Playtone-Amblin, will have its world premiere on Friday, March 15, sometime around the conclusion of the Masters of the Air television series.

Gary Goetzman, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Hanks serve as executive producers.

The documentary, which runs for one hour and is directed by Mark Herzog and Laurent Bouzereau, a longtime collaborator with Steven Spielberg, highlights the true stories of several characters and real-life airmen who appear in Masters of the Air. These include Callum Turner’s John Egan, Austin Butler’s Gale Cleven, Anthony Boyle’s Harry Crosby, Nate Mann’s Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, Jonas Moore’s Frank Murphy, Brandon Cook’s Alexander Jefferson, Josiah Cross’s Richard Macon, and numerous veterans like John “Lucky” Luckadoo and Robert Wolf.

A group of young Americans’ struggles and accomplishments are chronicled in The Bloody Hundredth, from the horror of Pearl Harbor to the elation of VE Day.

The Jan. 26 debut of Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group, also referred to as the “Bloody Hundredth,” as they engage in dangerous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and deal with the extreme cold, oxygen shortage, and pure horror of warfare at 25,000 feet in the air.

It depicts the mental and emotional toll that these young soldiers took while contributing to the devastation of Hitler’s Third Reich. Some were wounded or killed, while others were shot down and taken prisoner. And a few were fortunate enough to return home. Whatever each person’s outcome, a cost was imposed upon them all.

Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Josh Bolt, Kai Alexander, Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Barry Keoghan, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Ncuti Gatwa, and Josiah Cross are among the cast members.

The first trailer for The Bloody Hundredth, the Apple TV documentary that follows Masters of the Air, has been released. Masters of the Air, which debuted on Apple TV Plus earlier this year, is an adaptation of Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, which tells the authentic tale of the 100th Bomb Group’s World War II operations against Nazi Germany. The Bloody Hundredth, a documentary helmed by Amblin, Steven Spielberg, and Playtone, Tom Hanks, will employ a non-fiction style while telling the same story.

How Will the Bloody Hundredth Compare to Masters of The Air?

Amblin-Playtone’s Band of Brothers and The Pacific, two of the most renowned miniseries ever, are followed in Masters of the Air. Upon its premiere in 2001, Band of Brothers received high praise for its portrayal of the experiences of American soldiers in the European theater of World War II. Reviews of Masters of the Air have been overwhelmingly good, and the show has received recognition for its innovative approach to exploring a previously unexplored facet of the catastrophic mid-20th-century battle.

Netflix and Max both offer Band of Brothers and The Pacific for streaming right now.

In many aspects, Masters of the Air’s portrayal of historical events is true to fact, yet the program also makes artistic license. The play must provide a gripping and enjoyable story in addition to faithfully portraying the lives of Air Force veterans like Major Gale “Buck” Cleven, Major John “Bucky” Egan, Harry Crosby, and Major Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, among others. As a documentary, The Bloody Hundredth ought to give a more truthful picture of these pilots’ life.

What is The Bloody Hundredth about?

According to the synopsis, “the one-hour documentary highlights the true stories of the characters and real-life airmen featured in Masters of the Air, including veterans John ‘Lucky’ Luckadoo, Robert Wolf, and many others, as well as real-life airmen John Egan, Gale Cleven, Harry Crosby, Robert ‘Rosie’ Rosenthal, Frank Murphy, Alexander Jefferson, and Richard Macon.” “The Bloody Hundredth is a record of what was endured and achieved by a group of young Americans when their country and the world needed them most, from the shock of Pearl Harbor to the joy of VE Day.”
Laurent Bouzereau and Mark Herzog are directing The Bloody Hundredth. Executive producers include Gary Goetzman, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Hanks.
The season finale of Masters of the Air will air on March 15 after the show’s January 26, 2024, premiere on Apple TV+. Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Barry Keoghan, Nikolai Kinski, Stephen Campbell Moore, Sawyer Spielberg, and other actors star in the series, which was written by John Shiban and John Orloff.

The synopsis of Masters of the Air states, “Scripted by John Orloff and based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, it follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group, also known as the ‘Bloody Hundredth,’ as they conduct dangerous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and deal with the cold, oxygen shortage, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air.”

The central theme of Masters of the Air is “Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich.” Some were wounded or killed, while others were shot down and taken prisoner. And a few were fortunate enough to return home. Whatever each person’s outcome, a cost was imposed upon them all.

On March 15, 2024, The Bloody Hundredth will be available on Apple TV+. Meanwhile, Masters of the Air’s first seven episodes are currently available for streaming.

How the cast of ‘Masters of the Air’ transformed into the Bloody 100th

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg started their mission to bring World War II to television screens in 2001 with the release of the gripping HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers.” In 2010, the pair’s follow-up film, “The Pacific,” which focused on the Marine Corps, was released.

The third and greatly awaited episode of the two, “Masters of the Air,” which focuses on the activities of the 100th Bomb Group, or “Bloody 100th,” of the U.S. Army Air Force, premieres on Apple TV+ this Friday.

“Masters of the Air” portrays comradery as the main factor guiding the Allied victory, much like the previous series did. Because of this, the cast had to not only work within the historical parameters of the Bloody 100th’s actions, but also assume the roles of the legendary pilots and crew members who flew B-17 bombers on some of the riskiest missions the U.S. military had ever seen, frequently without the presence of fighter escorts.

One such person was 1st Lt. Harry Crosby, a navigator who started out as a chronically anxious and airsick crew member before becoming a major and serving with the 100th for the whole 22-month deployment.

Actor Anthony Boyle told Military Times, “I just fell in love with Harry Crosby.” He struck me as the most amazing, singular, and strange human being I have ever seen on TV. God, I would love to play him, I thought to myself. Simply put, I would adore spending a year with this individual.

Throughout the entire series, Crosby acts as the loose narrator. Crosby went on to become a prolific writer and the director of the Harvard University Writing Center after the war.

To get ready for the part, Boyle spoke with Crosby’s surviving family members and watched footage of the 2010 death of the actor.

Boyle remarked, “The last few jobs I’ve done have involved real people.” When there is not much information available on them, it is interesting. There was a book, some discussion on Crosby, and a video that I could play when I was playing him.

Crosby serves as the unreliable narrator for the whole series. After the war, Crosby continued to write extensively and served as the director of the Harvard University Writing Center.

Boyle examined footage of the actor’s 2010 passing and visited with Crosby’s surviving family members to prepare for the role.

“The last few jobs I’ve done have involved real people,” Boyle said. It is interesting when not a lot of information is available about them. In addition to a film that I could play while I was portraying Crosby, there was a book and some talk about him.
